Christian Yoga?

Posted by Margaret Simonsen on

Community Lutheran Church is offering an exciting new exercise class on Monday and Friday evenings at 5:00 PM in the Library.  It’s Christian yoga!  Yoga has become increasingly popular because of the benefits it offers by bringing a union of focus between mind and body, while simultaneously making the body stronger and more flexible.  All classes will be taught by instructors from the Holy Yoga organization and are for both women and men.

Did you know that yoga has been practiced for thousands of years and did not originate with the Hindu religion?  Some people dislike yoga because of its ties to Hinduism but actually, yoga predates Hinduism by at least 1,000 years and has been practiced over 4,000 years.  Yoga, like prayer, does not belong to a single religion.  In Christian yoga, we renew the mind, surrender out thoughts and will to Him, and seek a meditative state to listen to God.  Christian yoga pursues unity of body, mind, and the Holy Spirit that dwells within us with the intent of worshipping and serving Christ with our entire beings.

Holy Yoga embraces the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual realms, with the focus always on opening up to God and connecting with Him.  Unlike traditional yoga with its goal on self-awareness, Holy Yoga’s goal is Christ-awareness.  We renew the mind, surrender our thoughts and will to Him, and seek a meditative state to listen to God.  We use Christian music, Scripture, and learn to “let go” of control and learn to depend on Him.  Pastor Vogelsang has reviewed the program and does not find any doctrinal problems.

Yoga counters the effects of aging by stretching, strengthening, and balancing each joint and reduces pain by using the breath, meditation, and yoga postures.  It helps relieve the symptoms of arthritis, arthrosclerosis, chronic fatigue, digestion disorders, asthma, and varicose veins.  I can personally attest that it has completely relieved my chronic back pain!

Individual yoga classes run from $12-25 per class, but our instructors will teach for minimal donations of $5-10.  If you’ve checked around, you’ll see that this is a good deal!  To join this exciting future class, sign up at the Information Booth or call me at 760-749-2692 and leave your name and number.  Classes will begin in mid-April.
